Fire fighting

Stainless steel bellows, with their mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and flexible installation adaptability, can effectively meet the requirements of various complex working conditions in fire protection systems, providing a reliable solution for the safe and stable operation of fire-fighting pipelines. The following elaborates on aspects such as core advantages, applicable scenarios, selection and installation, and application benefits:
Matching of Core Advantages with Fire Protection System Requirements
The core requirements of fire protection systems for pipelines are strong pressure resistance, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, flexible installation, and adaptability to vibration/subsidence environments. The characteristics of stainless steel below can precisely match these needs:
High Strength and Pressure Resistance: Made of 304/316 stainless steel, they can withstand the conventional working pressure of fire protection systems (1.6MPa and above), meeting high-pressure working conditions such as fire hydrant systems and automatic sprinkler systems. They also have explosion resistance and can cope with instantaneous pressure fluctuations during fires.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: They can resist erosion from chloride ions, impurities in fire water, and external environments (such as humidity, acid, and alkali), avoiding water leakage or blockage caused by pipeline rust. They are especially suitable for places with strong corrosiveness, such as coastal areas and chemical industry zones.
Flexibility and Vibration Resistance: The bellows structure gives them good bending performance (the bending radius can reach 3-5 times the pipe diameter), enabling them to adapt to slight settlement or vibration of building structures (such as water pump operation, earthquakes, etc.), reducing stress at pipe joints and lowering the risk of fracture.
Smooth Inner Wall and Flow Guarantee: The inner wall is burr-free and has low resistance, which can ensure the smooth transportation of fire water or fire extinguishing agents (such as foam concentrate), avoiding the impact on fire-fighting efficiency due to excessive pipeline resistance.
Typical Application Scenarios
Stainless steel bellows can be widely used in the following scenarios in fire protection systems, solving the installation limitations and service life shortcomings of traditional pipelines (such as galvanized steel pipes):
Automatic Sprinkler System
Used for connecting sprinkler branch pipes and sprinkler heads. Their flexibility allows them to flexibly bypass structures such as beams and columns, reducing the use of elbows and lowering water flow resistance.
In narrow spaces such as ceilings and mezzanines, they are easy to bend and arrange, simplifying the installation process.
Fire Hydrant System
Suitable for connecting risers and horizontal pipes, and the branch pipe sections between fire hydrant boxes and main pipes. Especially in high-rise or super high-rise buildings, the scalability of bellows can compensate for the stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction of pipelines.
Fire Pump Room and Equipment Connection
Used as flexible connectors at the inlet and outlet of water pumps, absorbing vibrations during pump operation, reducing impact on the pipeline system, and protecting equipment and pipeline interfaces.
Gas Fire Extinguishing System
Used for the transportation pipelines of gas fire extinguishing agents such as heptafluoropropane and IG541. Due to the good compatibility between stainless steel and fire extinguishing agents, and their pressure resistance meet the high-pressure requirements of gas fire extinguishing systems (such as above 8MPa).
Fire Pipelines in Special Environments
In corrosive environments such as underground garages, damp basements, and chemical workshops, they replace traditional galvanized steel pipes, solving the problem of water leakage caused by rust and extending the service life of pipelines.
Scientific Selection and Installation Specifications
1. Specification Selection
Caliber Range: According to the flow requirements of the fire protection system, calibers such as DN15-DN300 are available. Common specifications (such as DN25, DN50, and DN100) are suitable for sprinkler branch pipes, fire hydrant branch pipes, and main pipes.
Pressure Rating: Select according to the designed pressure of the system. For example, automatic sprinkler systems need to use bellows with a nominal pressure ≥1.6MPa, and gas fire extinguishing systems need to match higher pressure ratings (such as 2.5MPa, 4.0MPa).
Material Selection: 304 stainless steel is used in ordinary environments, and 316 stainless steel is preferred in strongly corrosive environments such as coastal areas and chemical industry zones to improve chloride ion corrosion resistance.
2. Installation Points
Connection Methods:
When connecting to equipment such as valves and fire hydrants, a flange connection or a grooved connection is adopted to ensure reliable sealing.
Threaded connection can be used for connecting branch pipes and sprinkler heads, with special sealing gaskets to enhance sealing performance.
Bending and Fixing:
When bending, the bending radius must be controlled (not less than the radius specified by the product) to avoid thinning of the pipe wall due to excessive bending.
Straight sections are fixed with special pipe clamps every 1.5-2 meters, and fixed brackets must be added at both ends of the bent sections to prevent pipeline displacement.
Pressure Testing: After installation, a water pressure test must be carried out (the test pressure is 1.5 times the working pressure), and the pressure is maintained for 30 minutes without leakage to ensure the tightness of the system.
Coordination with Other Pipelines: When passing through floors and walls, sleeves must be installed to avoid direct contact between the pipeline and the structure, and reserved expansion space.
Application Benefits
Prolonged Service Life: The service life of stainless steel bellows can reach more than 30 years, far exceeding that of traditional galvanized steel pipes (8-10 years), reducing later replacement costs. They are especially suitable for public buildings, industrial plants, etc., which are used for a long time.
Reduced Maintenance Costs: Their corrosion resistance and vibration resistance reduce faults such as water leakage and blockage, lowering the frequency of daily maintenance; the smooth inner wall is not easy to scale, so frequent cleaning is not required.
Improved System Safety: In emergency situations such as fires and earthquakes, the pipeline is not easy to break, ensuring the continuous delivery of fire-fighting media and gaining time for fire fighting and rescue.
Adaptability to Complex Working Conditions: Their flexibility and anti-subsidence ability solve the structural adaptation problems in the pipeline transformation of old buildings, reducing pipeline damage caused by building deformation.
Summary
Stainless steel bellows, through their material and structural advantages, achieve comprehensive benefits of "safety and reliability, corrosion resistance and durability, and flexible installation" in fire protection systems. Especially in complex environments and high-demand fire protection scenarios, they are an ideal choice to replace traditional pipelines, providing a strong guarantee for the stable operation of fire protection systems.
